2025 Lotus Eletre Review: New Design, Performance and Price

The 2025 Lotus Eletre is a two-row medium Electric luxury SUV with a dual motor engine and a 112-kilowatt-hour battery system, with a possible range of 373 miles based on the European WLTP cycle. In our more cautious EPA cycle, that amounts to approximately 290 miles, which, although not class-leading, should be adequate for the majority of consumers.

A Lotus SUV, especially an electrified one, seemed like the punchline to a terrible joke a few years ago. After all, the very nature of SUVs and EVs defies the famed motto of firm creator Colin Chapman: “Simplify, then add lightness.” Lotus’ Eletre has effectively given the ancient concept the Old Yeller touch. While this would definitely annoy sports car enthusiasts worldwide, I would argue that it is both necessary and useful. Let me clarify.

When it hits the market in Europe, the regular 2024 Lotus Eletre will cost around $102,800. The S costs around $120,000, while the R can cost up to $137,800 (using current currency rates versus the British pound sterling). Pricing for the US market will vary, but we won’t know until we see it.

Okay, maybe your pupils work similarly to mine, but I can’t find a single good outside angle for the Eletre. I appreciate how the Eletre’s unconventional aerodynamics, such as the split roof spoiler, extended hatch spoiler, ducts, and vents, work together to achieve an impressive 0.26 drag coefficient. But, yeah, this thing is ugly as hell. I suppose that is preferable than becoming a faceless eco-blob (looking at you, Mercedes-Benz EQS).

2025 Lotus Eletre New Design

The 2025 Lotus Eletre cabin, on the other hand, receives significant accolades for its remarkable design and overall craftsmanship. The leather and suede materials compliment the metallic highlights beautifully, and the chairs are really comfy. There isn’t much storage space up front for little items, and locating the glove box release in under five minutes is tough. When the reverse side seats lie flat, the luggage area has a capacity of at least 54.1 cubic meters.

The Eletre’s base engine is a dual-motor four-wheel-drive system that generates 603 horsepower. After a test drive, we feel it is sufficient to accelerate the Eletre to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds. Our first thoughts are of a quick but comfortable performance SUV that isn’t as agile as Lotus’ sports cars. According to our calculations, the top-spec R has 905 horsepower and takes 2.7 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph. That type is far more dramatic on the road, producing unpleasant shaking and jerking when we pressed the throttle pedal hard. We will update this narrative with additional driving experiences and evaluation results as soon as you are able to operate automobile Eletre on our own territory.

For a subset of Lotus enthusiasts, the Eletre’s character will be determined on the road, just as it was for Mustang aficionados when Ford introduced the Mustang Mach-E electric SUV. Lotus let us drive the Eletre S for a day on the picturesque (and low-speed) roads surrounding Oslo, Norway’s capital and the world’s hottest EV market, and closed an airstrip so we could quickly test the high-performance Eletre R on a closed course.

Despite the 300-hp difference between the original Eletres and the R variant, both pull off the line with identical authority, even when the latter is in its special Track mode. The most noticeable difference for the driver is the automatic transmission connected to the R’s rear motor. It upshifts into second around 75 mph, though not as quickly as the comparable unit located in the back of Porsche’s Taycan. At this point, most people will not notice any difference in acceleration between the two, but a software upgrade could change that.

Regardless, Lotus has never been known for its neck-snapping acceleration—the company has always prioritized ride and handling. On that front, the Eletre has a vintage British vibe. The steering is light and direct, even if the Eletre lacks the visceral feel that Lotus is known for. Despite its small, the Eletre’s air suspension, four-wheel steering system, and 48-volt active anti-roll bars (another Lotus first) work together to help the vehicle shrink around the driver. Unlike the death grip rivals like the Urus and Porsche Cayenne Turbo GT have on the pavement, there’s a sense of traditional Lotus looseness when the Eletre transitions between turns, giving the idea that on the appropriate roads (and without minders), it’d be easy to steer the Eletre with simple throttle.

In base or S trims, the 109.0-kWh battery pack provides around 315 kilometres of driving range. The battery life of the high-performance Eletre R will be less impressive, with an estimated mileage of 260 miles per charge. When we have the opportunity to drive an Eletre, we will put it through our real-world 75-mph highway fuel economy and driving range test to see what it is capable of.

We haven’t tested the electric SUV yet, and the EPA hasn’t issued energy efficiency estimates for the Eletre. We’ll test it on our 75 mph highway energy efficiency route as soon as we have it, and we’ll update this post with the results. Lotus interiors have generally had a homebuilt feel to them, but the Eletre creates a stunningly harmonious atmosphere. The large, adult-friendly cabin, available in four- or five-seat configurations, boasts a rich combination of high-quality materials, panels and stitching that actually align, and a half-dozen functional screens.

Both the driver and the front passenger get slender 12.6-inch OLED monitors positioned on the dashboard. On the driver’s side, it functions as an instrument cluster in conjunction with a gigantic 29.0-inch head-up display, while on the passenger’s side, it allows them to operate the audio system as well as check temperature and time.

Between the front seats is a 15.1-inch OLED display that controls the majority of the Eletre’s key functions, with hard button backups for HVAC. The software suite, which is powered by the Unreal Engine (a video game graphics engine used in GMC’s Hummer EV pickup) and runs on an Android-based operating system, is very astounding. Although there are a few bugs—Lotus promises a deluge of upgrades before the Eletre ships, followed by frequent OTA updates—the screen is crystal clear, quick, responsive, and intuitive.
